The Importance of Good Posture

The Importance of Good Posture

5824543_sPosture has a major role in musculo-skeletal health, and  a host of aches and pains can be directly related to poor posture.

Correct posture means that the body’s key parts stack vertically on top of each other, which allows the joints to sit in their middle position — a state that means joints are mildly unstable as no ligaments are tightened in this joint alignment. The small, postural muscles — which need to be both controlled and strong — have to therefore work to maintain stability in this correct position.

Modern living however means that we now sit for far longer than ever, and our penchant for slouching encourages the lower back to take the exact opposite to its ideal shape.

The act of sitting is in itself is tough enough on the back but slouching now poses one of the most constant and damaging strains on our spines.

The art of correcting posture requires time and work for an efficient, low effort, correct postural habit to form, but the health and fitness benefits reaped will be worthwhile in both the short and long term.

Self-correction of posture is very difficult to perform correctly; and hands on advice from our team of highly trained experts can significantly speed up the process.

When it comes to musculo-skeletal health, the sooner poor posture is corrected, the better so why not click here to get in touch today?

The Six Nations Rugby Championship: Physiotherapy’s Key Role

The Six Nations Rugby Championship: Physiotherapy’s Key Role

captainsSBTomorrow  we welcome six weeks of high-octane action in the form of the annual Six Nations Rugby Union Championship.

As England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, France and Italy go head-to-head to battle for the title of champions of Europe, physiotherapists behind the scenes will be engaged in their own fight to keep their best players on the pitch, and off the treatment table.

More than just treating players when they’re injured, physiotherapy plays a key role in producing a strong, quick and injury-free team – and is not solely reserved for top rugby players.

Participating in any sport or physical activity increases your likelihood of injury, and although the body can eventually heal on its own, the bones, muscles and other tissues can be significantly weaker after injury if appropriate measures are not carried out.

One of the greatest risks is the formation of scar tissue, which leads to a decreased range of motion and lingering pain. Physiotherapy will provide specific exercises designed to safely promote blood flow to the injured area. This is highly important as blood carries vital nutrients to damaged cells and tissues.

Following an injury, many are tempted to refraining from activity to avoid pain, however, lack of movement and exercise can worsen the problem by causing joint stiffness and muscle atrophy. At PhysioMatters, our team of physiotherapists will develop a program to help you stretch vital muscles, tendons and ligaments safely to regain both your strength and range of motion.

Our sports injury and rehabilitation treatment programmes also encompass a variety of techniques to relieve muscle stress and pain to promoting optimum wellness. Soft tissue manipulation and massage are among the beneficial techniques our physiotherapists employ to target imbalances in muscles and bone structure, and certain sports or activities may be recommended for your particular conditions.

We’ll Miss You, Jess!

Sadly, the team at PhysioMatters is waving good-bye to our sports therapist, Jess, who is taking a 6 month sabbatical.

We are incredibly sorry to see the very talented Jess leave us, but we wish her well and  hope to have her back at the clinic before the end of the year.

We will still be operating our sports massage and sports therapy clinics so please get in touch to find out about treatment times and availability.
