Coach Warren Gatland has picked his 2013 Lions Rugby Squad, with 15 Welsh players making the cut.
Captained by Wales’ Sam Warburton, the squad will be put through an intense training programme before battling it out with Australia this summer. Meanwhile, physiotherapists behind the scenes will be engaged in their own fight to keep their best players on the pitch, and off the treatment table.
More than just treating players when they’re injured, physiotherapy plays a key role in producing a strong, quick and injury-free team – and is not solely reserved for top rugby players.
Participating in any sport or physical activity increases a person’s likelihood of injury, and although the body can eventually heal on its own, the bones, muscles and other tissues can be significantly weaker after injury if appropriate measures are not carried out.
One of the greatest risks is the formation of scar tissue, which leads to a decreased range of motion and lingering pain. Physiotherapy will provide specific exercises designed to safely promote blood flow to the injured area. This is highly important as blood carries vital nutrients to damaged cells and tissues.
Following an injury, many are tempted to refraining from activity to avoid pain, however, lack of movement and exercise can worsen the problem by causing joint stiffness and muscle atrophy. At PhysioMatters, our team of physiotherapists will develop a program to help you stretch vital muscles, tendons and ligaments safely to regain both your strength and range of motion.
Our sports injury and rehabilitation treatment programmes also encompass a variety of techniques to relieve muscle stress and pain to promoting optimum wellness. Soft tissue manipulation and massage are among the beneficial techniques our physiotherapists employ to target imbalances in muscles and bone structure, and certain sports or activities may be recommended for your particular conditions.
