We at PhysioMatters are excited to reveal that one of our patients Richard Harrington is running the Marathon de Sable. Richard who is a BAFTA Cymru award-winning actor has been preparing for this ‘ultra’ marathon, which is currently taking place in the sweltering Sahara Dessert.

Sounds grueling? The course, which runs over six days, is around 156 miles (or 254km), which, by the way, is the equivalent of running from London to Dover, deciding not to go to France after all and then running back again… In 120 degree heat… With a backpack on… and with the voices in your head chitchatting about ice-cold beer!

A documentary crew have been following Richard’s incredible journey – including his preparation at the clinic – and we will be sure to keep you posted on its TV air date.

As with all forms of exercise, physiotherapy plays a vital role in minimising the risk of injury before, during and after running a marathon. The most common conditions that arise from endurance challenges such as the Marathon des Sables are muscle cramps and soft tissue strains, and – to a lesser extent – joint and bone injuries.

If you are currently training for any long-distance running challenge, why not click here to get in touch to see how we can help you maximise your potential and minimize your risk of injury?
